Windows XP Service Pack 3 Installation Problems

Problem
- Some users may experience an inability to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 on Windows XP HuskyPC computers.
- This is a result of configurations made to the UITS HuskyPC Windows image to increase compatibility across the various hardware implementations
Affected Computers
- All computers re-imaged by UITS TSS between November 2007 to the present by UITS
- All Windows XP HuskyPC computers shipped from Dell since March 2008
Solution
- Click on the following link and choose run. Then follow the default prompts; http://tss.uconn.edu/Public/xpsp3_fix.exe
- When prompted, choose a time for future Automatic Updates to run
- Reboot computer.
- Run the online Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) to install any remaining updates including XP Service Pack 3 from Microsoft.
Technical Details
- UITS TSS has included a modification to the boot.ini on our current universal image which includes switches which inhibits correct installation of Windows XP SP3.
- Fix also addresses a corrupt registry key where a permission change is necessary to install XP SP3
Installation Assistance and Screen Shots
1. Upon running the fix the following prompt will be displayed, please click "RUN" to being the fix.
2. Next, click "RUN" to begin the installation

3. Click "SETUP" to continue installing the fix

4. The following progress window will display as the fix is being applied

5. Please choose a convienient time for Microsoft Automatic Updates to run within your daily schedule to provide the lease impact to your work day.
6. Lastly, REBOOT your computer and upon loggin back in, got to http://update.microsoft.com to install updates available from Microsoft, including Windows XP SP3
