Windows Update causing slowness/freezing of computer

On Tuesday, May 8th, Microsoft released an update which has been causing many Windows XP computers to slow down to the point of freezing.  If you have been experiencing this issue, please follow the steps below.

Solution:
1. Click on the following link and choose run.  Then follow the default prompts (choosing run, enter to continue, and I agree) to install BOTH patches.

2. Reboot your computer.
3. Run the online Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) to install any remaining updates from Microsoft.

Technical Details:

These problems could occur after you install the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: 916089. When you ran Windows Update to scan for updates that used Windows Installer, including Office updates, the CPU utilization may now reach 100 percent for a prolonged period.
